Case Study: Massey Wilcox – Protecting Personnel in a High-Traffic Logistics Yard
The challenge: Finding an extra layer of safety on a growing site
Established in 1954 and now approaching its 71st anniversary, Massey Wilcox Transport Ltd is a haulage company and a member of the Pallet-Track overnight system. They handle an estimated 700 pallets daily across 25 vehicles and six forklift trucks.
As the pallet business expanded with increasing numbers of vehicles, forklifts, and personnel, the company became highly aware of the need to segregate personnel and vehicles. Massey Wilcox had already implemented initial safety measures, including installing new trucks fitted with a lighting system that projects around the truck and marking out the yard with safe walkways.
Following these site improvements, the company was on the lookout for a safety system that would provide the final, necessary layer of protection. They needed a solution to protect personnel working in a busy environment where segregation isn’t always possible.
The solution: A collaborative approach to personnel protection
While visiting a nearby factory in Bridgwater, Massey Wilcox discovered ZoneSafe and felt it was the crucial extra layer of safety the company was looking for.
Our approach relies on close collaboration; we worked with Massey Wilcox to assess their site requirements and operational needs, quickly concluding the need for a system to protect personnel working between vehicles and forklifts. We supplied systems onto all six forklifts, installed battery checking and charging ports, and fitted staff with tags.
To ensure compliance, the company implemented a clear tag management protocol: regular drivers carry their own tags, and visiting drivers or other non-regular personnel are issued a spare tag from the office when they enter the intense operational area. This two-way system actively alerts both the forklift driver and the personnel to their nearness to each other.
The result: High user acceptance and proactive incident preventions
Massey Wilcox has reported good user acceptance across the site, leading to a significant improvement in the company’s safety culture.
Managing Director Robert Wilcox noted the system provides an ongoing safety education that is instilling behavioural changes in the way their people work. He feels the company can be “a little more relaxed knowing that this system is working for us”. The system provides the additional protection needed to complete overall safety on site, and the company is confident that it will “eventually become just another part of PPE”.
The most powerful benefit is the clear, proactive prevention of incidents: “I believe every time a tag vibrates it’s a potential situation that has been avoided.” The system has proven to be the final, significant extra layer of safety Massey Wilcox required.
