RFID technology – what is it?

ZoneSafe uses radio frequency identification (RFID technology) to create detection zones around vehicles, assets, crossing points and walkways.

But what IS RFID technology?

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technique that stores data, which can then be retrieved via radio waves. Using electromagnetic fields, it can automatically identify and track tags that are attached to objects. The tags that are attached to those objects contain electronically stored information – passive tags collect energy from a nearby RFID reader, and active tags will have a local power source (such as a battery).

Similar to a barcode, RFID tags can store information about a type of product – and contain unique identifiers that correspond and save to a form of database records. Yet unlike a barcode, some tags don’t need to be within the line of sight of the reader, so can be embedded in the tracked object.

As they use RFID technology, ZoneSafe tags do not require line of sight, and can be detected regardless of obstructions, blind spots or poor visibility.

Active ZoneSafe tags can be worn by personnel, fitted to assets or set up around hazards. Tags are identified by the system when they enter the detection zone. This triggers an audible visual alert, warning vehicle operators of the tags’ close proximity to the vehicle.

What is ZoneSafe?

A ZoneSafe in-cab control unit is fitted within reach of the vehicle’s operator (a forklift for example). An audible visual alarm alerts the operator every time a tagged person or object is detected entering the antenna’s detection zone.

ZoneSafe detection antenna(s) are fitted to the forklift truck (or other vehicle). This creates a 3-9 metre 360continuous detection zone around the vehicle, which detects personnel or objects with a ZoneSafe tag.

ZoneSafe active RFID tags are worn by all personnel or fitted to assets. The tag can be placed in a hi viz jacket, clipped to a lanyard, fitted to a hard hat, worn on your belt or simply placed in your pocket.

RFID as a safety tool

ZoneSafe offers people and asset protection with its range of proximity warning and alert systems. Using innovative identification and detection RFID techonologies, ZoneSafe significantly reduces the risk of accidents, injury and damage to people and assets on work sites.
