Case Study: SAAM Ports – Enhancing Crane Safety in South American Ports

The challenge: Protecting personnel and assets in a port environment

SAAM, a major cargo support company with operations across South America, wanted to find a solution to protect personnel and assets from vehicle collisions within their ports. They needed a system that could address several key objectives, including protecting personnel in key operational areas, minimizing the risk of harm to pedestrians around container handling, and raising overall safety standards to be recognized for their commitment to safety.

The solution: A proven proximity warning system

After evaluating and comparing several solutions on the market, SAAM chose the ZoneSafe Vehicle to Person system. The system was installed across their operational fleet and over 250 personnel tags were supplied to their Iquique Port in Chile. The ZoneSafe system was fitted to all reach stackers, which have limited visibility, to identify pedestrian workers in close proximity and significantly increase safety and awareness.

The result: Increased safety, morale, and a global rollout

The ZoneSafe system exceeded SAAM’s expectations. Workers received the system well, and it had a positive and immediate impact on safety. SAAM was also surprised to find that the system increased staff morale, with employees expressing a greater sense of appreciation and care. Since the successful implementation, ZoneSafe has become a mandatory part of workers’ PPE. SAAM is now working with ZoneSafe to roll out the system to its other ports across Chile and South America.
