Case Study: Qube – Increasing Visibility for Heavy Machinery

The challenge: Enhancing safety for a “zero harm” strategy
Qube, a logistics and infrastructure company in Hamilton, Australia, operates under a “zero harm” strategy. To meet this objective, they needed a system that would increase the visibility of personnel to operators of heavy machinery within their Port operations. Their goal was to reduce the risk of accidents by alerting machinery operators to the presence of people, particularly around vehicle interfaces.
The solution: A six-month trial of proximity technology
To address their safety objectives, Qube carried out a six-month evaluation of the ZoneSafe Vehicle To Person Alert system. They installed the system on three forklifts and required all personnel in a designated trial zone to wear ZoneSafe tags. The trial monitored the system’s effectiveness, which included assessing user acceptance and the robustness of the equipment. During testing, a heavy forklift ran over a tag four times before it failed, proving its durability.
The result: Exceeding expectations and a site-wide rollout
The trial exceeded Qube’s expectations and surpassed their monitored KPI values. The ZoneSafe system was found to perform well, with a high level of acceptance among users who could see the immediate safety benefits. The evaluation also confirmed that the system complimented existing safety procedures without causing user complacency. Following the trial, Qube concluded that the system was essential and recommended it be extended to all vehicles across their 28 Ports, including reach stackers and for shed and vessel hold operations. The system significantly contributed to Qube’s zero harm strategy.
