Case Study: APM Terminals – Reducing Collision Risk for Port Personnel
The challenge: Improving safety in a high-risk port
With Callao port operating 24 hours a day to handle a growing volume of global trade, APM Terminals faced a significant safety challenge. The company’s large workforce and fleet of industrial vehicles, particularly reach stackers, operate in close proximity. These vehicles have limited driver visibility when maneuvering containers, which increases the risk of serious collisions and accidents with pedestrian workers. A solution was needed to help drivers better identify personnel and prevent potential fatalities.
The solution: A Vehicle-to-Person alert application
To address these risks, APM Terminals used the ZoneSafe Vehicle To Person Alert Application on its fleet of reach stackers. The system is designed to serve as an essential driving aid by making the driver aware of pedestrians working in close proximity. The in-cab control system emits a clear audible and visual alarm whenever a pedestrian wearing a ZoneSafe tag enters the vehicle’s detection zone. As requested, ZoneSafe also included additional options such as a touchscreen display to indicate pedestrian locations and a zone-switching feature.
The result: A more effective and safer workplace
The trial proved that the system provides a highly effective and stable detection zone around the reach stacker, regardless of whether it is carrying a container. Both drivers and operational staff concluded that ZoneSafe would significantly reduce the risk of collisions with personnel. This helps APM Terminals work toward their goal of zero fatalities and accidents.
