Case Study: Keyo Agricultural Services – Proactive Safety for Farm Operatives
The challenge: Reducing collision risk to farm operatives
Keyo Agricultural Services Ltd is a top farming services company with over 50 years of experience, providing specialty services to major UK food manufacturers, including 2 Sisters, Moy Park, Avara, and Maelor Foods. As Keyo’s employees travel to various farms across the UK to support the poultry industry, the company prioritises welfare, compliance, and innovation.
As their business expanded, handling increasing numbers of vehicles, forklifts, and personnel, Keyo became highly aware of the requirement to increase safety on site. The poultry industry is extremely demanding, requiring operational systems to be exceptionally versatile and easy to use across different farm locations.
Following improvements in site layout, forklift lighting systems, and painted walkways, Keyo was on the lookout for a final safety system that would complete overall site safety. They needed a solution to protect personnel working in a busy environment where segregation isn’t always possible, especially since their machinery often operates around concealed entrances and exits.
The solution: A portable, tailored proximity system
Keyo partnered with ZoneSafe to create a customised and portable safety solution. After a thorough on-site assessment, ZoneSafe provided an innovative system that was both effective and sensitive to the farm environment.
Farm vehicles were fitted with ZoneSafe technology, and personnel were given wearable vibrating tags. The system was designed to provide dual alerts:
- Vehicle Operator Alert: Alerts the forklift operator when a person is nearby.
- Personnel Alert: Alerts the pedestrian via a pulsed vibration when they come within 9-metre proximity of the machine.
This tailored approach ensures minimal noise and light in animal-sensitive areas. The system uses a flashing beacon to provide a visual alert only at the site entrance and exit of doorways. The entire system was housed in a robust, portable case, allowing it to be easily transported and set up at each new location within minutes.
The result: Enhanced safety and positive feedback
The tailored solution has seen immediate success, being rolled out across 12 teams already and is now an integral part of Keyo’s procedures, PPE, and safety training program. The number of recorded incidents has been significantly reduced.
The proof of the technology’s value is its ability to alert workers who are operating around farm machinery, often coming from concealed entrances and exits that the drivers won’t be able to see. Employees have noted that the technology is easy to operate, quick to set up, and makes them feel safer at work.
